Maximilian Schirmer

I’m a M.Sc. (Media Systems) student at the Bauhaus-University, Weimar. My research interests span the fields of Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp). Aspects of Context-aware and Distributed Computing are also very important in my research.
I am permanently affiliated with the CSCW group and Cooperative Media Lab (CML), supervised by Prof. Dr. Tom Gross.
My activities at the CSCW group range from regular student projects to my occupation as a student assistant and also include student volunteer (SV) work (like for the Mensch & Computer conference).
I always try to focus on the human factors in software systems. Good software systems support users in their day-to-day work without confronting them with restrictions or complicated user interfaces.
Experiences and Skills
I received my Bachelor’s degree in Media Systems with the top-most grade of 1.0 for my thesis CollaborationBus Aqua: Synergies in Finding and Editing Ubiquitous Computing Configurations.
My experiences in software development include various programming languages like:
- C/C++
- Java
- Objective-C
as well as scripting languages (AppleScript, Python). I have advanced knowledge of the Cocoa API (PDO, Bindings, Quartz Composer, Interface Builder, …) and J2SE frameworks (JNI, RMI, Networking, Swing/AWT, …) for application development as well as general knowledge in network and concurrent programming.
In terms of web development, I’m an advocate for semantic markup in web pages with many years of experience in:
- XHTML
- CSS
- PHP
- MySQL
I can handle Adobe’s Creative Suite and use LaTeX as primary word processor whenever possible.
Other Activities and Interests
I’m a Mac OS X software developer, publishing mostly freeware and contributing to various open source projects, including the ambitious MarcoPolo project.
In my spare time, I enjoy taking photographs and have a strong passion for progressive rock music. Further on, reading good books and biking make me savour my stay on this planet.
